ABSTRACT

We report a case of an iatrogenic arteriovenous fistula complicated by catheter-directed thrombolytic therapy in a patient with acute deep vein thrombosis of a lower extremity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an arteriovenous fistula between the sural artery and popliteal vein in that situation. As the vessels have a close anatomical relationship, the arteriovenous fistula seems to be a potential complication after endovascular thrombolytic therapy of acute deep vein thrombosis.

ABSTRACT

Renovascular hypertension results from a lesion that impairs blood flow to a part of or all, of one or both kidneys. Renal artery stenosis is the major cause of renovascular hypertension and the most common cause of treatable secondary hypertension. Recently, percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty(PTRA) with or without stent placement, has become the preferred choice for correcting symptomatic renal artery stenosis since it is less invasive than surgical reconstruction. PTRA with balloons designed for the dilatation of the coronary artery can be tried in small sized renal artery stenosis. We report a case of renovascular hypertension in a 13-year-old male who had small sized renal artery stenosis. Hypertension was controlled by PTRA with balloon dilatation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of the aroma massage on shoulder pain, depression, and sleep disturbance in hemiparesis patients. METHOD: The research design was a nonequivalent control group nonsynchronized design. The data was collected from July 1 to August 31, 2003 at D medical Center in Busan. The subjects were 37 patients that they were assigned to two groups, nineteen subjects in the experimental group and seventeen subjects in the control group. The oil made from a blend of lavendar, clarysage, bergamot at a ratio 3:1:2 used for relieving shoulder pain, depression, sleep disturbance. The instruments used for this study were Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) for shoulder pain, Zung' depression scale, 4 score's scale for sleep disturbance. The data were analyzed using SPSS and hypotheses were examined with ANCOVA. RESULTS: Shoulder pain, depression, and sleep disturbance were significantly lower in the experimental group compared than the control group. CONCLUSION: The aroma massage using selected essential oils is an effective intervention for relieving shoulder pain, depression, sleep disturbance in hemiparesis patients. However differences between aroma massage and massage were not clear, further study needs to be done.

ABSTRACT

Among the four-hundred patients with cerebral aneurysms confirmed by cerebral angiography, we divided them into two age groups, one with ages 39 years or younger(young-aged group: 51 patients, 12.8%), and another with ages 65 years or older(old aged group: 45 patients, 11.3%). A comparison was undertaken in regard to clinical characteristics and overall outcome in two groups. In young-aged group, the female-to-male ratio was 2.2: 1 whereas, women was predominant by five times more in old aged group. Anterior communicating artery aneurysm was the most common site(43.1%) in young-aged group, unlike to old aged group where posterior communicating artery was the most common site(33.3%). The most common symptom was headache in both groups, and the hypertension was more frequent in young-aged group(45.5%) than old-aged group(33.3%). Surgery was performed in 43 patients(84%) in younger group, and 37 patients(82.2%) in elderly group. Young-aged group showed more favorable outcome(91%) than old-aged group(70%).

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of mixed germ cell tumor arising at the third ventricle and extending to the lateral ventricle in a sixteen-year-old male who presented with headache, nausea, vomiting and polydipsia. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain demonstrated a lobulated mass in the third and left lateral ventricle. For surgery, the anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach was used, and on histologic examination three concurrent histologic components were found: germinoma, embryonal carcinoma, and endodermal sinus tumor.
